My Latest Painting 'Sunset Symphony'

It's fair to say that as well as skies I am captivated by sunsets and sunrises, I just love the way the entire atmosphere takes on a serene and ethereal quality, to me there's just something magical about them. The warm colours associated with sunsets have been linked to feelings of happiness and optimism. For me as an artist I'm drawn to the intensity of colour, the fiery oranges, pinks and purples evoke joy and a sense of peace.

With my latest painting I've put the two together (skies and sunsets) and this has resulted in 'Sunset Symphony' I've probably over exaggerated the colours a tad but I feel with watercolour paint the colours can dry lighter and bit duller and flatter than I sometimes want so I wanted to make sure I didn't lose the intensity of colour, and to also try to accentuate the brilliance of the sun, I'm not sure I've quite achieved this yet, (need to work on this!) I've also added pastel over the top of some of the watercolour again to add contrast and texture.

I will hopefully frame this and make some prints and take them with me to my Open Studios exhibition which is taking place very soon, Tuesday 3rd - Saturday 7th September in the back room of Godshill Methodist Church, Godshill, Isle of Wight PO38 3HZ where I'll be open from 10am - 5pm each day.

There are lots of other artisans taking part in this years Isle of Wight Open Studios which is on now at various locations across the Island, visit www.isleofwightopenstudios.co.uk where you can download a free full PDF brochure featuring all participants which shows their locations, opening days and times.
